Getting fired put Doechii on track to becoming a Grammy-winning star.

After the Top Dawg Entertainment artist won her first Grammy Award on Sunday night, a YouTube video posted in January 2020 recirculated. The video shows Doechii sharing that she was fired from her job.

"So, I got fired today," the Alligator Bites Never Heal rapper said while she munched on a snack. "I don’t give a fuck, to be honest. Either way, I'ma be straight."

She continued, "Tomorrow, I’m just going to go to a whole bunch of studios and ask if they have any internships open. And also just ask questions, like, I don't fucking know."

After sharing that she was willing to approach record labels who were willing to hear her, Doechii added that she had "nothing to lose."

"I have no place, I have no job, I have no children I have—who gives a fuck? Who cares? Who fucking cares?" she said. "I'm just gonna do it and let you know how that goes."

Doechii would sign to Top Dawg just two years later after dropping her first two mixtapes, Coven Music Session, Vol. 1 and Oh the Places You'll Go, and her Bra-Less EP.

Evidently, Doechii's leap of faith worked in her favor, as her latest mixtape won Best Rap Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. She also performed a Broadway-inspired medley of "Catfish" and "Denial Is a River" during the telecast.

In her Grammy acceptance speech, Doechii delivered an inspiring message to young Black women watching her.

"I know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there that are watching me right now and I want to tell you that you can do it," she said. "Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, that tell you [that] you can’t be here, that you’re too dark, or that you’re not smart enough or too dramatic or too loud. You are exactly who you need to be."
