After a neck-and-neck race spanning months, it looks like Donald Trump will be the 47th President of the United States,

Since news of his state victories over opponent Kamala Harris began circulating, the former president had declared an election victory for himself before voting counts were finalised. Specifically, after winning the swing state of Pennsylvania, he addressed supporters to thank them and acknowledge his running mate, JD Vance.

With the election result officially called by the Associated Press (AP), Trump, 78, proved the popular choice in critical states tipped to determine the scales. These swing states— Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—were to be the deciding factor, and Trump managed to snag the majority.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is one of many global leaders who congratulated the former media personality.

“Congratulations to President Donald Trump on his election victory,” Albanaese wrote on X. “Australians and Americans are great friends and true allies. Working together, we can ensure the partnership between our nations and peoples remains strong into the future.”

French President Emmanuel Macron also congratulated Trump.

“Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump,” he wrote. “Ready to work together as we did for four years. With your convictions and mine. With respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was an early celebrator, dubbing Trump’s a “historic return” to the White House and a “powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America.”

This is the second time Trump has won the presidential race. He was initially elected in 2016 and served as the President of the United States from 2017-2021, during which he made history by being impeached—twice. He made history again as the first president convicted of a felony when convicted in Manhatten of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

While many mourn what the next four years has in store for the world, particularly for women, migrants, working-class families and the LGBTQ+ community, Trump’s supporters have shown up in droves to celebrate the changes he has promised. As the country has navigated this tumultuous election campaign, social divides have proven to run deep. Trump’s political comeback and victory has been credited to a growing frustration among voters in the face of a cost-of-living crisis.

The Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, has no plans to address the public tonight.
