Donald Trump’s ever-more-obvious potty mouth “demeans the office” he’s seeking to hold, said Vice President Kamala Harris. Appearing on MSNBC Sunday, Harris said Trump’s recent language fails the “standards of decorum” commonly expected on the international stage: “The American people deserve so much better."
Trump has grown especially rambling and unfocused in recent appearances, to say nothing of his increasingly off-color language. Harris’s remarks came the day after the GOP nominee called her a “shit vice president” and shared a crass lengthy anecdote about a golfer’s penis at a rally outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At other points in the campaign stop, Trump prompted the crowd to shout profanities about Harris and President Joseph Biden, teeing them up with the witless Mad Lib: “Everything they touch turns to…” (“shit”). At both his rallies and on his social media accounts, Trump is known for dropping regular s- and f-bombs, plus the occasional graphic sexual innuendo. Last week, the former president also cursed at a high-profile Catholic charity dinner, standing just feet from the Archbishop of New York.
Those antics could play into Harris’s hands. Democrats have lately sought to highlight Trump’s behavior on the campaign trail, with a new Harris-Walz ad spot dubbing him “unhinged” and “unstable.” Even Trump’s allies seem to think his vulgarity has gotten out of hand, with some saying privately that they believe his “impetuousness and scattershot style” could alienate voters, The New York Times reported.
Publicly, however, neither Trump nor his campaign appear to give a shit about the rules and norms of presidential behavior. In a Monday statement to The Hill, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said simply: “President Trump is 100% correct—Kamala Harris is a shit vice president.” On Saturday, Trump also told supporters that the evangelical leader Franklin Graham had urged him to clean up his language. That day, Trump acknowledged to the crowd that he ignored Graham’s supplication.
