With Jalen Hurts' status up-in-the-air, the Philadelphia Eagles have added support to the depth chart at the quarterback position.
The Eagles are signing quarterback Ian Book to the practice squad after he visited the team on Wednesday, according to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo.
"The #Eagles are signing QB Ian Book to the practice squad following his visit yesterday, sources say," Garafolo reported on X Thursday morning.
Hurts, who is dealing with a concussion, was listed as DNP in Wednesday's projected practice report. The All-Pro signal-caller exited Sunday's 36-33 loss to the Washington Commanders following a tackle that resulted in his helmet bashing against the turf.
Hurts gained 13 yards as he was attempting to scramble on second-and-20 before the hit issued by Commanders line backer Frankie Luvu.
No flag had been thrown on the play.
Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett took over for Hurts in relief on Sunday. He was also listed with a designation on Wednesday, labeled as limited because of a ribs injury.
"He always has done a good job protecting himself and has been dynamic both as a passer and as a runner. Anytime something goes down and you lose one of your best players, you wish they would do something else or not take that hit in that scenario," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said.
"We always run runs that protect him, and we always want him to protect himself. Again, this is an unfortunate part of football, the injuries that happen. Unfortunately, sometimes it's with head injuries, and you never want to see that because you always want what's best for your players and their well-being.
"Obviously don't want him to take that hit."
Book has made one appearance on an NFL field in his pro career, which took place in 2021 when he was with the New Orleans Saints. He started the game and threw 135 yards for 0 touchdowns and two interceptions.
This will be his second stint within the Eagles organization. Book spent time on the Eagles practice squad in 2022.
He's gone unsigned ever since, having been released by the Kansas City Chiefs back in the 2024 preseason.
The 12-3 Eagles will take another shot at clinching the NFC East in Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys after failing to do so in the loss to Washington.
Their quarterback situation for Sunday remains unclear while Hurts progresses through the NFL's five-step concussion protocol.
