A legendary character is set to make a dramatic return to EastEnders, as Grant Mitchell is returning to the BBC soap for its 40th anniversary celebrations.
Eight years after his last appearance in Walford, Ross Kemp is set to bring the iconic troublemaker back to life.
As one half of the infamous Mitchell brothers, alongside Phil, Grant has been at the heart of some of the show's most significant storylines since his debut in 1990. The Mitchell family has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including tragic losses, characters being forced to flee, and family members being imprisoned, the Mirror reports.
Phil, played by Steve McFadden, is currently struggling with loneliness and depression, isolating himself from his loved ones. The return of Nigel Bates, Grant and Phil's estranged best friend, has added to the drama, with more to be revealed about his own struggles.
As the show approaches its 40th anniversary in February, bosses have confirmed that Grant will return to Walford, although the exact circumstances of his return and the duration of his stay remain under wraps. What is known is that his return will be "explosive" and will coincide with a "short stint" in the New Year, marking a significant moment in the show's history.
Grant has been living in Portugal since his departure in September 2016, following the death of his mother, Peggy Mitchell. Ross has hinted at a major return after speculation earlier this year, promising that Grant "comes back with a bang" and indicating there will be "action" ahead for fans as he shared his enthusiasm for rejoining the cast of EastEnders.

He revealed: "I'm delighted to be returning to EastEnders as the show heads towards its 40th anniversary. EastEnders has always meant so much to me, so to return as the show is about to celebrate such a special anniversary, is an absolute honour. Grant has never been far from the action and let's just say, this time is no different as he certainly comes back with a bang."
Meanwhile, soap chief Chris Clenshaw expressed excitement over Ross's comeback, saying it's set to make the anniversary "unmissable".
He stated: "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ross Kemp back to EastEnders as he reprises the legendary role of Grant Mitchell. Whilst I'm not currently revealing exactly what brings Grant back to Walford, I can say that his return will play a significant part in the show's 40th anniversary, and will makeup many moments of truly unmissable TV."
