Election Day Sees Long Lines Across Nation: In Photos

2 months ago 10

Many voters across the nation on Tuesday's Election Day have arrived to their local polling site to find long lines.

Voting is now open in all 50 states as millions of Americans cast their ballots to decide the next President of the United States with Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, facing off against former President Donald Trump, the GOP nominee.

Most polls opened at 6:00 or 7:00 a.m. local time and as of 12:00 p.m. ET, all were still open. They will begin to close in the U.S. from 7 p.m. with the majority closing between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m

What Lines Look Like in Battleground States

Pennsylvania voters turned out in droves after polls opened at 7:00 a.m. in the hotly-contested swing state. Videos posted on social media show voters lining up round the block to cast their ballots.

In one video, between 80 and 100 people can be seen queuing outside a polling station in Jenkins Township in Luzerne County. In another video, voters can be seen lining the halls of the University of Pennsylvania before polls opened.

Meanwhile, voters gathered in York County at 5.55 a.m., an hour and five minutes before polls opened, according to one social media user.

With 19 Electoral College votes, Pennsylvania is a crucial swing state to win, voting for the winning candidate in 48 of the past 59 elections.

Polls in Pennsylvania are currently very close, with polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight showing Harris 0.2 points ahead, while forecaster Nate Silver's tracker showed Trump 0.1 points ahead.

Meanwhile, Georgia, with 16 electoral votes, is almost as valuable as Pennsylvania as many voters are seen lining up to cast their vote at Park Tavern.

About one-third of voters in the state are Black, a demographic that polls shows largely back the Harris campaign. Meanwhile, Trump polls much stronger than Harris in the state's rural areas.

Michigan also saw big lines as the state carries 15 electoral votes and has been a strong bellwether for the rest of the country. It voted for Trump in 2016 and switched back to Democrat with President Joe Biden in 2020.

Wisconsin with 10 electoral votes is another swing state that saw long lines.
The state went for Trump in 2016 and for Biden in 2020 with just over 20,000 votes. It remains another state that could go either way in Tuesday's election.

In Arizona, voters were lining up in the early morning hours. The Grand Canyon state, which has 11 electoral votes, is another key battleground. Biden in 2020 won Arizona for the Democrats for the first time since the 1990s, and Republicans view it as a key state to win in the 2024 election.

What Lines Looked Like in Other States

Massive lines were also spotted in other states such as Florida and Nebraska.

In Florida, Trump won the state in both 2016 and 2020. In 2016, the Republican candidate defeated Democratic rival Hillary Clinton with 48.6 percent of the vote over her 47.4 percent. Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, St. Lucie, Osceola, Orange, Alachua, Leon and Gadsden counties went for Clinton.

Four years ago, Trump won Florida by a much bigger margin, with Trump bringing in 51.2 percent of the vote over Biden's 47.9 percent. Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Alachua, Duval, Leon and Gadsen counties voted for Biden.

Nebraska has long been a Republican stronghold in presidential elections, but its 2nd District has twice awarded its electoral vote to the Democratic nominee—Barack Obama in 2008 and Biden in 2020.

The district, which incorporates the state's largest city, Omaha, is one of the few in the country that grants a single electoral vote based on the district's popular vote, making it a key target for both parties. It has become especially significant for Harris. It is the most urban and by far the most Democrat-leaning area in the state.

In 2020, Trump won Nebraska by 19 points, securing 58 percent of the vote in the state to Biden's 39 percent.
