There was also a gala performance in aid of the iconic singer's Aids Foundation. The premiere also saw Sir Elton John in appearance. The iconic singer, however, heartbreakingly admitted his sight issues meant he wasn't able to watch the event. Despite his issues, he said he still enjoyed the occasion and was led off stage by husband David Furnish.

The 77-year-old rocker opened up about contracting an infection which left him feeling "stuck". Speaking at the theatre, he told fans: "I've lost my eyesight and cannot see the stage."

He added: "As some of you may know I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven't been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it. To my husband who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews... it's hard for me to see it but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight OK. Thank you for coming!" Sources have told the Mirror that following the performance, Sir Elton stayed close-by to meet the show's cast and crew.

Sir Elton is also set to be seen on the small screen in his upcoming Disney+ film Elton John: Never Too Late. It's said he made a heartbreaking confession when filming as he mentioned his and David's kids, Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11. Cameras followed him to capture his final three-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour and according to Radio Times, the star said: "I want to see our children get married, but I don't think I'm going to be around for that."

In an emotional response, David said: "That really upset me, because in my mind I sort of think Elton is going to live for ever – we all think that – and Elton is so vibrant that it's an easy thing to believe, but it forces you to confront that reality."
