Ellen DeGeneres has been a big part of the California landscape for decades, not only as a performer in Hollywood but also as a successful real estate investor. Now, the former talk show host and her wife, Portia de Rossi, have reportedly departed the U.S. and Donald Trump might be to blame.

The couple has already settled in the Cotswold, a rural area of south-central England, according to The Wrap. They were reportedly so serious about the move that their beloved Montecito estate has “been pocket-listed or will be listed soon” as they say goodbye to the sunshine state for good. A source told the media outlet that the results of the 2024 presidential election were “their primary motivation” for leaving ahead of Donald Trump’s second term in the White House.

DeGeneres has been an outspoken critic of Donald Trump’s going back to his first administration. She lashed out at him on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018 when Oprah Winfrey was her guest. He had attacked Winfrey, calling her “very insecure” on X after she interviewed a panel of Michigan voters on 60 Minutes about the political divide in the U.S.

“President Trump, it’s time for an a-ha moment,” DeGeneres said, via The Hill. “You’re not just some guy on Twitter anymore — you’re the president for all of us. It is your job to unite people, and you don’t do it by attacking people, especially Oprah.” The 66-year-old comedian’s dislike of Donald Trump’s leadership isn’t an uncommon thought in Hollywood circles.

Eva Longoria opened up to Marie Claire recently about her exit from Los Angeles for Mexico and Spain. “I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky,” she said while noting her “privilege” to leave the U.S. “They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.” The Flaming Hot director has since backtracked from that statement, probably from the backlash she received.

“Will you please let them know I didn’t move out of the United States because of Trump?” she noted on the Behind the Table podcast. “I didn’t leave because of the political environment; I left because my work took me there. I’ve been there for years, so I just don’t like that it’s politicized. I’m a proud American — I’ve always been a proud American.”

DeGeneres hasn’t publicly shared her reasons yet for moving to Cotswold, but she and de Rossi are in solid A-list company in their new neighborhood. They will be able to borrow a cup of sugar from famous faces, including David and Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, and Elizabeth Hurley, according to the Daily Mail. It will be a fresh start for the duo, but it sounds like they wanted to avoid any chaos Donald Trump might cause during his second term in office.
