Elton John is still struggling with his eyesight after contracting a severe eye infection over the summer.
In a Monday, November 25, interview on Good Morning America, the 77-year-old icon stated he hasn't been able to put out new music because of his vision problems.
"It's been a while since I've done anything. I just have to get off my backside," the acclaimed singer began. "I, unfortunately, lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France. It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest."
The EGOT winner explained the severity of his condition, telling interviewer Robin Roberts, "It kind of floored me. I can't see anything, I can't read anything, I can't watch anything."
However, the "I'm Still Standing" singer said that hope is not lost as he is trying to get his eye healthy. "There's hope and encouragement that it will be okay, but I'm kind of stuck in the moment because I can do something like this [interview], but going into the studio and recording, I don't know because I can't see a lyric [to] start," John explained. "We're taking initiative to try and get it better. That's really what we're concentrating on. It's never fortunate for anything like this to happen."
Despite his health challenges, the six-time Grammy Award winner is looking at the positives in his life, including his two children, Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, whom he shares with his husband, David Furnish. John is also looking forward to his upcoming documentary.
"I'm so lucky. I'm the luckiest man in the world. I'm so proud of the documentary, I'm proud of my sons, I'm proud of my attitude towards myself and what's going on, I'm just very lucky, and I'm very grateful," John gushed.
The legendary musician first announced his eye problems in September via Instagram. John posted a statement writing, "Over the summer, I've been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye. I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye. I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks. I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far."
Elton John: Never Too Late will be available to stream on Disney+ on Friday, December 13.
