Elton John confirms he has lost his eyesight at Red Carpet event

Elton John has revealed that he can't watch his own musical due to vision loss.

He wrote the music for The Devil Wears Prada, which premiered yesterday, as well as the music for other iconic musicals like The Lion King, Billy Elliot, and Tammy Faye. The legendary musician composed the original music for all of these shows.

Because of an infection that affected his right eye, Sir Elton can only listen to his new musical, as he is unable to see it. Sir Elton attended the production of The Devil Wears Prada on London's West End, alongside his husband David Furnish. However, the rocker was led away from the stage by David. At the gala performance, Sir Elton said: "I have lost my sight and I haven't been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed listening to it."

Speaking at the theatre, he told fans: "I've lost my eyesight and cannot see the stage." He went on to say: "As some of you may know I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven't been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it.

"To my husband who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews... it's hard for me to see it but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight OK. Thank you for coming!" Sources have told the Mirror that following the performance, Sir Elton made sure to stay around and meet the cast and crew of the show.

Elton previously said the eye infection, diagnosed earlier this year, has stalled his music recording. Sir Elton continued: "It's been a while since I've done anything, and well, I just have to get off my backside. I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the south of France and it’s been four months now since I haven't been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest.

"So there's hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but it's... I'm kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do something like this (an interview), but going into the studio and recording, I don't know, because I can't see a lyric for a start."

The 77-year-old had previously opened up about his vision struggles on Instagram. The dad-of-two revealed that he lost sight after contracting the infection while holidaying in the South of France. Taking to Instagram in September, the star said: "Over the summer, I've been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye. I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.

"I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks. I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far. With love and gratitude."
