Sir Elton John admits he finds himself thinking of his own mortality as he approaches 78.

The legendary rocker will celebrate his milestone birthday in just a matter of weeks but as a dad to two young sons, he acknowledges that there's still things he wants to do with them. In a rare and candid discussion, Sir Elton opened up about his new music which appeared to take its toll on the Rocketman hitmaker.

Elton recently teamed up with his longterm writing partner, Bernie Taupin for his latest record and revealed that while recording, he suddenly burst into tears when the chorus of a song hit a nerve. The musician has spoken candidly in the past about growing older and previously stated he feared he won't be around to see his children get married.

Speaking openly about his new music and how it affected him, Sir Elton said: "When I was writing the song [music set to Bernie Taupin's lyrics] I started the verse and said 'Oh this is interesting and I got to the chorus and I realised what it was about and I broke down for about 45 minutes.

He went on to add, speaking to Simon Mayo on his Greatest Hits Radio Drivetime Show: "We all think about mortality - I get to 78 next March and I think about mortality because of my kids, and there's so much I want to do and it hit a real nerve. But it's definitely not the last album - this is the beginning of a new Elton John album career and the other ones are fantastic and I love them but they've been put to bed and this is the start of something new."

Elton has teamed up with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile for his latest album, Who Believes In Angels and admitted that the record which is out in April this year was a "risk" for him to take. He said: "The tour finished in July and then we went into the studio in October (2024), with nothing written, with Bernie Taupin and Andrew Watt the producer.

"So the four of us went in and I've never made an album under those circumstances before, it's just usually Bernie and me and a producer. But, there were four of us with all different ideas, throwing them around and it was difficult for me to come to grips with it at first, because I was a little tired. I was very nervous, I was filled with a lot of self doubt, because I the album to be really successful, and I knew what I wanted it to sound like."

The new album will be Sir Elton's first studio release since The Lockdown Sessions in 2021, which saw him team up witht he likes of Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Surfaces, Stevie Nicks and Lil Nas X. However, his album Diamonds, documenting his greatest hits between 1970 and 2016 recently topped the charts – eight years after its initial release.

During an appearance on The One Show, he said: "I am so thrilled and excited that Diamonds has finally got to number one in the UK chart. I am so thrilled and excited that Diamonds has finally got to number one in the UK chart. Thank you, everyone."
