The Free the Nipple movement has seen more and more celebrities embracing their bodies and rejecting sexist societal norms and we just love to see it! Female stars have long been vulnerable to prying photographers trying to catch their “nip slips” without their consent but recent years some of these women have reclaimed the concept by deliberately showing off a body part often seen as something to cover up.

Women have been given the messaging throughout history to keep our nipples hidden and private from the world — as if we should somehow be ashamed by this part of our body. But, as society begins to question these norms and stigmas, powerful campaigns such as the Free the Nipple movement have become ever so popular.

In 2022, actress Florence Pugh proudly defended herself from critics who body-shamed her after she stunned in a sheer dress at a Valentino fashion show. She discussed the moment in a 2023 interview with Elle, saying: “It’s the freedom that people are scared of; the fact I’m comfortable and happy. Keeping women down by commenting on their bodies has worked for a very long time.”

“We’ve become so terrified of the human body that we can’t even look at my two little cute nipples behind fabric in a way that isn’t sexual. We need to keep reminding everybody that there is more than one reason for women’s bodies [to exist],” she added.

Pugh isn’t the only star who has spoken out in support of the movement. Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde shared of her pro-nipple stance to Vogue in 2021. “I think that we can all really benefit from making sure that we don’t allow the stigmatization of women’s bodies to infect our own perspective of ourself. If we are allowed opportunities to celebrate our body, it has an effect. It has an effect on how we treat one another and how we treat ourselves.”

Of course, catching someone in a nip slip when they didn’t intend to do so is still totally wrong but we’re grateful that some women are reclaiming the nipple as something worth showing off.

As more celebrities begin to proudly display their nipples, perhaps there will be less pressure on women across the U.S. (and the world) to keep them hidden. After all, every part of a woman’s body is beautiful – and that includes the nipples. Why not embrace them?
