Eric Johnson was spotted without his wedding ring amid rumors he and wife Jessica Simpson are headed for a divorce after ten years of marriage.
On Tuesday, November 12, the NFL alum, 45, was spotted taking a stroll in Los Angeles and his wedding ring was nowhere to be found, as seen in photos published by People.
Although neither Eric nor Jessica, 44, have opened up about their marriage woes, they haven’t tried to clear up the rumors. In fact, the couple has fueled split speculation countless times, although they maintained their happy family image.
“Eric has had one foot out the door for a long time, because Jessica is high-maintenance and difficult to live with. He complains about it all the time,” a source exclusively told In Touch in April.
The insider later noted that Eric “loves Jessica deep down and wants their marriage to work. But it’s like she cares more about the public’s perception of her than her marriage. If she doesn’t start looking at the big picture, she may lose Eric.”
Eric’s 45th birthday was on September 5, and instead of seeing loving birthday tributes online from Jessica, the “With You” singer shared cryptic posts.
“Forgiveness doesn’t change that person. Forgiveness changes you. Guess what forgiveness does not do?” a pastor said to a congregation in a video Jessica reshared on Instagram. “Forgiveness does not mean you forget. One of the most crazy theories is that you forgive and forget. You don’t forget, but you do have the opportunity to forgive every time you remember.”
When October rolled around, a second source exclusively told In Touch that the “Take My Breath Away” artist was ready to officially separate from Eric.
“It’s pretty much over. It’s only a matter of time before she files for divorce,” the insider shared.
Jessica fueled split reports by celebrating her “personal” comeback amid her comeback in the music industry.
“Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic,” the Dukes of Hazzard actress wrote via Instagram at the time. “This comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve.”
Fans buzzed in the comments section and collectively believed that Jessica was subtly confirming the divorce rumors in the post.
“Yep, called this a while ago. We love you. Stay strong,” one person wrote. A second fan replied, “Is this j simp saying she’s single?”
The same day Eric was spotted without his wedding band, TMZ reported that Jessica and her friends contacted two divorce lawyers. After making initial contact with the attorneys, Jessica halted progress by not inquiring further about a separation.
Jessica and Eric tied the knot in 2014 and share kids Maxwell “Maxi” Drew, 12, Ace Knute, 11, and Birdie Mae, 5. The celebrity temporarily moved to Nashville in between living in Los Angeles and claimed the new cities healed her.
“Being in Nashville, even my kids are like, ‘You laugh the whole time. You’re so happy,’” Jessica gushed. “It’s because I’m not on guard. I’m with a lot of like-minded people. It’s not about the celebrities — it’s really about the music and the heart and the conversation.”
