Almost three decades after Julie James (played by the inimitable Jennifer Love Hewitt) and her friends saw their worlds turned upside down in I Know What You Did Last Summer, the cult 90s slasher film is getting continued with another instalment.
Announced by Sony, the upcoming sequel will be helmed by American director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose previous credits include co-writing Thor: Love and Thunder with Taika Waititi and the teen revenge comedy Do Revenge.
Kaytin Robinson and Sam Lansky will be writing the film based off a script by Leah McKendrick. As a big fan of the original film, McKendrick will likely stay true to its former glory.
“I love the original film,” she told Collider of the project. “I grew up on it as well. And I was really missing horror.”
“When you’re rebooting something that you love so deeply from your childhood, you’re like, ‘I know how we can do this and not make it cheesy, and it can stay true to the mythology, and we can bring back the OGs,” she added.
Adapted from the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan and written by Kevin Williamson (of Scream fame), the original film was released in 1997. In the Jim Gillespie-directed film, four high schoolers—Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillipe, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Sarah Michelle Gellar—get into a drunken car accident on a lone highway. After a year of avowed silence about the gorey details, the group are reunited when they find themselves terrorised by a hook-wielding figure hellbent on revenge.
Despite a modest production budget, the film saw substantial box office success and effectively launched the careers of its rookie cast. Its 1998 sequel, titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, was equally successful, but subsequent attempts to revive the series failed. But with original talent and fresh creatives behind this reboot, we’re hopeful.
Ahead, everything we know about the upcoming project.
What will the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel be about?
Reports have revealed the title: I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer. From this, as well as the confirmation of some returning cast members (more on that later), we can gather that the plot will be picking up from where the original films left off.
Without a novel to go off of, though, the storyline will be entirely original.
Who is starring in I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer?
Fans of the original film will rejoice over the news that Jennifer Love Hewitt will reprise her role as Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr. will return as Ray Bronson, according to IMDB.
Newcomers include musician Gabbriette Bechtel, who was recently spotted hanging around Sydney with her fiance, Matty Healy, for filming.
This will mark the It-girl’s first foray into film, but with her deadpan stare and 90s-coded aesthetic, we think she’ll fit right in. Frankly, she was born for this.
Joining Bechtel is Outer Banks actress Madelyn Cline, in an undisclosed role.
Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders is also listed as part of the cast, which may make for an interesting vibe on set, considering Cline dated Wonders’ ex, Pete Davidson, shortly after they broke up.
The Wilds star Sarah Pidgeon and Tyriq Withers are also starring in the sequel.
Recently, some of the cast joined each other at the premier of another sequel to a classic, Gladiator II, in Sydney.
When will I Never Forget What You Did Last Summer be released?
The film is just starting to film as of October 2024, but Deadline reports that the sequel will be released on July 18, 2025, via Columbia Pictures. Aptly coinciding with the Northern Hemisphere summer.
