David Domoney gives advice on cleaning your patio
An expert has warned that neglecting one key patio task can promote the growth of mould, moss and algae - which can be tough to remove later on.
During autumn, as leaves pile up and dirt is scattered by the wind, it's crucial to sweep them away before they settle in the gaps between the decking boards and patio slabs.
An expert at Travis Perkins highlighted how, if left unattended, these debris can decompose, leading to issues like moss, algae, and mould.
When it comes to concrete patios, a sudden drop in temperatures can even create bigger challenges, as water can seep into existing cracks, and if it freezes, it expands, worsening the damage.
Over time, the pointing between concrete slabs may also deteriorate, particularly after wet or frosty spells.

Step-by-step guide to cleaning your patio
If you’d like to tackle the cleaning of your patio or decking yourself, check your kitchen for common household items you might already have.
Remove excess dirt
Before cleaning, sweep the area to eliminate loose dirt. Use a bristle brush to break up any stubborn clumps you encounter.
It’s also a good idea to move any pots, furniture, or other items out of the way, as these can trap debris.

Prepare a cleaning solution
Mix a bucket of water with a squirt of washing-up liquid and pour it over the surface. This mixture can help lift stains, as the soap clings to grease.
Let it sit for about ten minutes before scrubbing any particularly dirty spots.
Rinse off the solution
Rinse away the soapy mixture using a hose, ensuring you remove all residue, as this can create a slipping hazard.
When cleaning composite decking, direct the hose along the grain to ensure that any remaining dirt is pushed away rather than getting lodged.
