Farm Dog Has One Job, Is Terrible at It: 'No Instincts Kicking In'

3 hours ago 2

Social media viewers were left laughing after an owner confronted his canine for not using his farm dog instincts to deal with an intruder in the garage.

The dog owner from Ohio found his golden retriever, Betty, lounging in the garage after a day of farm living. Farm dogs often help run the place—rounding up cattle, protecting livestock and patrolling. However, not all dogs are excellent at getting the job done. The owner, known on TikTok as @pastordan23, recently learned Betty falls into that category.

In his January 30 video, the owner addressed Betty, who was calmly lying in the garage while a possum lurked around. He asked: "No instincts kicking in right now?" He couldn't believe Betty didn't flinch or even notice.

Instead, she looked confused at what he was saying. She didn't understand his problem. After all, she was resting after a fun-filled day.

The caption reads: "Good at snuggles, bad at most other dog traits."

The owner told Newsweek via TikTok that he doesn't think Betty ever noticed the possum, as this wouldn't be the first time she didn't use doggy instincts to track, hunt or retrieve other animals.

"If she ever realized it was there, she never cared," he said. "And that was the third time a possum came in the garage that week."

Each time, Betty didn't bother getting up to protect her home. She didn't confront the possums. In her mind, she works when she wants and where she wants. It was up to her owner to figure out how to get the possums out of the garage.

Viewer Reactions

The clip amassed over 363,400 views, 69,900 likes and 525 comments as of Wednesday. TikTok users couldn't stop cracking up at her unawareness. She's an unbothered queen.

"That pup is a lover, not a fighter," commented one person.

Quick to defend Betty's lack of instinct, someone wrote: "She said, 'Nah I'm off the clock.'"

Another added: "Betty is tired, you take care of it."

A fourth TikTok user wrote: "Idk why people think Goldens are good for hunting etc. They only retrieve socks and weird objects and want love all day long lol."

The owner responded: "So many good socks have been lost."
