Father John Misty hilariously keeps dropping new albums at the same time as Kendrick Lamar—seemingly by total coincidence.
Misty released a new album, Mahashmashana yesterday on Friday, the same day that Lamar dropped GNX without any prior indication of the project. This brought out the jokes from fans.
"I'm so sorry that you happened to drop on the worst possible day to drop a new album," an X user wrote to FJM.
Father John responded drily, “It’s okay only other times it’s happened was 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2022.”
It's true: The two very different musicians have dropped albums within weeks or days of each other five different times in the past.
The "Real Love Baby" singer also joked that he was “furiously scribbling my seeming response to” news of Lamar's release, which surely came just as much as a surprise to him as everyone else.
Later that day, Father John posted a song called “God’s Trash” with art parodying Lamar’s covers for the series of diss tracks he dropped to Drake this year.
Though Father John was joking in his response, he’d be careful not to prod Lamar, who loves to call out other artists on his projects. On GNX, he calls out Snoop Dogg for sharing Drake’s “Taylor Made Freestyle” diss on social media.
On the track “wacced out murals,” Lamar raps, "Snoop posted 'Taylor Made,' I prayed it was the edibles/I couldn't believe it, it was only right for me to let it go,” seemingly giving the West Coast legend a pass for the post. Snoop has already responded to the lyric, joking that it “was the edibles” in a post on X.
Lamar also addressed the criticism he's faced for being named the halftime show performer at the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana, next year, an honor many thought should go instead to Lil Wayne.
“Used to bump 'Tha Carter III,' I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down,” Lamar rapped on “wacced out murals.”
Later on, he went more in depth about the frustrations that others feel: “Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me / All these n***as agitated / I’m just glad it’s on their faces / Quite frankly, plenty artist but they outdated / Old n***as flows trying to convince me that you they favorite."
Lil Wayne responded to that bar and suggested that he’s ready for rap beef it it comes to it.
“I just be chillin & day still kome 4 my head,” he wrote. “Let’s not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all. No one really wants destruction, not even me but I shall destroy if disturbed.”
