A video from the cockpit of a plane has surprised many internet users by showing how pilots manage to land aircraft during heavy rainfall.
A video posted to TikTok by user @damailufta, a flight attendant, shows a plane touching down at Sola Airport in Stavanger, Norway, during unfavorable conditions. The video has gone viral since it was posted on October 14, receiving over three million views and over 1,000 comments from fascinated viewers.
"This was the day I learned that planes have wiper blades," said the TikTok user, showing her view from behind the pilots in the cockpit as windshield wipers move rapidly across the plane's front windows as it gears up for landing.
Rain splashes up the plane's window as the airport runway comes into view, with the wipers working hard to keep the view clear. The minute-long clip revealed some other things that happen during a flight's landing, such as an audible countdown of how close the aircraft is getting to the ground and the extensive number of controls lit up in front of and above the two pilots.
Stavanger is the third-largest city in Norway and is located in the southwest of the Scandinavian country.
According to One Monroe Aerospace, a Florida company that stocks hardware for the aerospace industry, wipers help pilots see better when flying in rainy conditions but are mostly limited to commercial plans and smaller aircraft.
The global airline industry is expected to have grown significantly by the end of 2024. Data provided by Statista reveals that the number of flights performed by the global airline industry is expected to reach 38.7 million before the year ends, nearing the pre-pandemic record of over 39 million in 2019.
People took to the comments of the flight attendant's video, many expressing a similar shock to what it looks like to land a plane in heavy rain.
"Those windshield wipers are fighting for their lives," TikTok user Diego Franklin joked.
"This has to be a joke those CAN'T be the real wipers?" @itskelseybitchh commented.
"Of all the technology that goes into an airplane seems like they bought the wipers from Advanced Auto Parts," another TikToker, Salvatore, wrote.
"It is scary to drive a car in that weather, let alone fly a plane," said @Newbfingers.
"The windshield wipers deserve a round of applause," joked Wyoming Elopements.
