It is the coldest start to December that Miami, Florida, has seen since 2019.
Data from Processed Webdata by Pricing Culture sourced from the National Weather Service (NWS) and provided to Newsweek shows that the average temperature in Miami this week will be 68.57 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 4 degrees below the historical average for this time of year.
Temperatures dipped in South Florida over the weekend and will remain cool. NWS senior meteorologist Robert Garcia told Newsweek that the cooler-than-normal temperatures are the result of a series of cold fronts that recently moved through and reinforced dry, cool air across the region.
Wind is contributing to the chilly weather, making it feel as if it's colder than it really is.
"Breezy northerly winds will result in wind chill values tonight several degrees below actual forecast low temperatures," NWS Miami posted on X, formerly Twitter. "How low? The potential exists for wind chill values in the 30s west of Lake Okeechobee with wind chill values in the 40s and 50s elsewhere across SoFlo."
In a graphic included with the post, NWS Miami said the low temperatures are as much as 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, with Wednesday morning expected to be the coldest.
According to the Pricing Culture data, temperatures will begin to rise at the end of this week, with lows hitting the high 60s by December 6.
The last time Miami saw temperatures similar to this week was in 2019 when the average temperature was 67.33 degrees Fahrenheit, the data showed. Last year, the average temperature was near 75 degrees, 2.27 degrees Fahrenheit above average.
"This week's average temperature of 68.57°F is 4.08°F below the 5-year average of 72.65°F, a deviation of -5.62%," a statement provided with the data said. "This is the lowest deviation from the 5-year average in the last 5 years. The average temperature for this week is also the lowest in the last 5 years, with the exception of 2019."
"The deviation from the 5-year average is significant, indicating a cooler than average week," the statement added. "The forecast for the next 7 days shows a gradual increase in temperature, with highs reaching 78°F by the 8th. This suggests that the cooler temperatures may be short-lived, and the average temperature for the week may end up being closer to the 5-year average."
Temperatures in South Florida are likely to rise after this week, with the NWS Climate Prediction Center's temperature outlook predicting above-average temperatures for the region from December 8 to December 16.
The bout of cool weather in South Florida comes as freeze warnings have been issued for north Florida for Monday night into Tuesday morning as temperatures dip below 30 degrees.
