Caleb Ferguson has a long history of pitching on good teams. His major league career began in 2018 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he was part of their 2020 World Series championship team two years later.
A year ago, Ferguson was traded to the eventual American League champion New York Yankees. He didn't get to face off against his old team in the 2024 World Series, however; the Yankees traded Ferguson to the Houston Astros at midseason. The Astros won the American League West.
Now, Ferguson is headed to a team in a very different stage in its window for contention. According to multiple reports Thursday, Ferguson has a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ferguson, a 28-year-old left-hander, went 1-3 with a 5.13 ERA in 42 appearances out of the Yankees' bullpen last season. After the trade to Houston, he went 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 20 games. He's 19-13 overall in parts of six major league seasons, with a 3.68 ERA and six saves.
Alex Stumpf of MLB.com was first to report Ferguson's contract will pay him $3 million.
