Freddie Gibbs Wonders If Diddy 'Paid Off Pac Killers' in New Song

2 weeks ago 7

Freddie Gibbs explores complicated feelings about Diddy’s arrest in his new track “On the Set.”

The song, taken from Gibbs’ You Only Die 1nce album, opens with the Vultures 1 scene-stealer exclaiming “Goddamn, they done got Diddy.” An official video—directed by Harley Astorga, Ben “Lambo” Lambert, and Gibbs—brings this moment to life by showing Gibbs presumably reading Diddy-related news on his phone. The album closer sees Gibbs rapping that he “used to look up to” Diddy, even when that n***a Pac dissed him.” From there, Gibbs addresses speculation over Pac’s 1996 murder, like so:

Goddamn, they done got Diddy
I used to look up to that n***a even when that n***a Pac dissed him
I wonder if he paid off Pac killers
I wish them, I wish them n***as in L.A. ain't never pop Biggie

Later, Gibbs offers a variation of this sentiment, this time noting that he initially considered retirement following the 2019 shooting death of Nipsey Hussle. Gibbs, who was reportedly targeted in a shooting in Brooklyn roughly a decade ago, also tucks in tributes to Rich Homie Quan, Young Dolph, and Spanto.

Goddamn, they done got Diddy
Yeah, I wish they never shot up Pac and Biggie
I was gon' retire from rap when I seen that shit with Nipsey
Crazy when that shit hit your peers, that shit be hittin' different

Ahead of his well-timed new album, his first since 2022’s Soul Sold Separately, Gibbs guested on an episode of Complex’s Sneaker Shopping. Revisit that below.

As for Diddy, he remains in custody following his September arrest in a racketeering and trafficking case. He has pleaded not guilty.
