Another K-pop girl group under HYBE has chosen to end their exclusive contracts with their label.
On Friday, November 29, Pledis Entertainment released an official statement announcing the decision regarding fromis_9.
“Hello. This is Pledis Entertainment. Firstly, we wish to thank the fans who have loved fromis_9 without fail, at any time,” the statement read. “The contract with fromis_9 (Lee Saerom, Song Hayoung, Roh Jisun, Lee Seoyeon, Lee Chaeyoung, Lee Nagyung and Baek Jiheon) will end on the coming December 31. We have deeply discussed the individual future plans and activities for a long time with the members, and after sufficient conversation, we have mutually decided to end the exclusive contracts.”
Fromis_9 was initially formed through the survival show Idol School. The group was originally managed by Off The Record Entertainment before transitioning to Pledis Entertainment in 2021. Their move to Pledis coincided with the company’s acquisition by HYBE, integrating fromis_9 into HYBE’s extensive roster of artists.
This announcement comes after a year of controversy for the group. Earlier in 2024, member Park Ji-won made a shocking revelation during a Weverse Live broadcast. When asked about her goals for the coming year, she candidly shared, “For me, to receive my first pay by the end of this year.” This unexpected statement raised questions about financial management and sparked outrage among fans.
Despite growing backlash and protests organized by fans, Pledis Entertainment remained tight-lipped on the matter. When approached for comment, the agency stated, “they had nothing to say about that.” Addressing Park’s statement indirectly, Pledis previously assured, “We are preparing for fromis_9’s comeback without any problems. This year, the group plans to carry out various activities, including releasing new music and holding special photo exhibitions,” adding, “We will provide all the necessary support for them.”
The group has also faced past allegations of mismanagement. Member Lee Chae-young openly expressed frustration, saying, “Why are we… We want to do activities. Why can’t we have a long promotion? This only happens to us, only Fromis_9. I’m so upset,” further fueling concerns about the company’s handling of the group.
Fromis_9 is the second girl group to announce their departure with HYBE, on the same day NewJeans announced they were set to terminate their contracts with ADOR and HYBE.
