Future robots could possibly one day sense human emotions just by touching the skin

According to researchers, robots of the future may be able to sense human emotions through touching their skin. The emotional state of a person was ascertained via a study that was published in IEEE Access using skin conductance, an indicator of how well skin conducts electricity. Sweat production and nerve activity cause changes in skin conductance, which can be used to identify various emotional states. Conventional emotion-detection methods like speech analysis and facial recognition are frequently prone to mistakes.

According to a recent study that was published in the IEEE Access journal, skin conductance is an intriguing method for measuring feelings in real-time, and it predicts that robots may soon be able to sense human emotions through skin touch.

Sweating and nerve impulses during emotional reactions can affect the skin’s conductance, which is its capacity to carry electricity. Skin conductance provides a dependable, non-invasive method that’s opposite to speech analysis or facial recognition.

The electrical properties of the skin can be subtly changed by human emotions, giving immediate input on emotional states. This is in contrast to existing methods that are prone to mistakes in unfavourable situations.

Scientists from Tokyo Metropolitan University are said to have used sensors on the fingertips of 33 participants in an experiment where they were shown emotionally charged movies, including comedic sketches, horror situations, and family reunions.

According to the study, skin conductance exhibits distinct patterns for every emotion. The responses that lasted the longest were those of fear, indicating an evolutionary mechanism for maintaining vigilance. Due to the overlap of opposing emotions, family bonding—a mixture of joy and sorrow—showed slower reactions. Hormones produced quick yet transient reactions. Therefore, the results imply that skin conductance may transform emotion-detecting technologies when paired with other physiological cues.

How amazing it is that in the future you will not have to say that no one understands my emotions.

Moreover, Researchers have found that by comprehending how the dynamics of skin conductance vary depending on the emotion, a sense of emotion identification systems may be enhanced. Future robots and intelligent devices might be able to interact with people and understand their emotional states thanks to this. The approach could be improved by combining skin conductance with other physiological information to increase accuracy, albeit it is not ideal.
