A cooling mattress can be a game-changer for couples who sleep hot. And two of the most popular options are the GhostBed Luxe and the Cocoon by Sealy Chill. Both mattresses are made using an all-foam design but have advanced cooling technologies to help deliver a cool and comfortable night's sleep.

We've tested both the GhostBed Luxe and the Cocoon by Sealy Chill, and while they don't quite make it into this year's best mattress guide for all sleepers, they are fantastic options for hot sleepers, bringing together exceptional pressure relief and support with temperature regulation. The GhostBed Luxe uses a proprietary Ghost Ice Layer and cooling fibres, while the Cocoon by Sealy Chill uses a Phase Change Material cover to keep sleepers cool. Alongside this, both isolate motion well, making them a great choice for couples.

If you’re considering either of these mattresses, now is a good time to buy. Both mattress brands offer year-round mattress sales and discounts so you’ll be able to grab a bargain regardless of the time of year. So we’ve put the Ghosted Luxe vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill head to head to highlight the differences in price, design, comfort and of course temperature regulation to find out which cooling mattress best suits your sleeping needs.

GhostBed Luxe vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress: Price & Trial

  • Evergreen sales reduce the cost of both cooling mattresses
  • The GhostBed Luxe has an extra night sleep trial at 101-nights vs Cocoon By Sealy Chill with 100 nights
  • The GhostBed has a 25 year warranty while the Cocoon by Sealy Chill has 10-years

Both of these beds have an evergreen sale so you’ll never have to worry about paying full MSRP. The GhostBed has a starting MSRP of $2,295 for a twin making it a lot more expensive than the Cocoon by Sealy Chill which is just $619 MSRP for a twin.

The GhostBed sale ranges between 40-50% with the higher discounts being reserved for major sales events. The current sale sees 40% off which brings the cost of a queen down to $1,557 (was $2,595). We don’t expect to see prices dip any lower this year, although GhostBed does sometimes throw in a free bedding bundle.

In contrast, the Cocoon by Sealy Chill is a budget cooling mattress and we are used to seeing an evergreen sale of 35% off. Right now a queen is down to $699 (was $1,079) and you also get a free bedding bundle which includes two pillows, a sheet set and a mattress protector worth $179.

Both mattresses come with a sleep trial, warranty and free shipping. GhostBed have a 101-night warranty which is one night more than Cocoon by Sealy at 100-nights. The GhostBed also has a longer warranty period with a 25-year limited warranty vs a 10-year limited warranty at Cocoon by Sealy. However, both should cover you for the lifetime of your mattress.

GhostBed Luxe vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress: Materials & Design

  • Both mattresses are all-foam
  • The GhostBed Luxe is 13” tall and has a Ghost Ice Cover
  • The Cocoon by Sealy Chill is 10” tall and uses phase-change materials in the cover

Both of these mattresses feature in our best memory foam mattress guide thanks to their all foam design. And we know what you’re thinking, all-foam is usually a no-no when it comes to mattresses for hot sleepers. But both the GhostBed Luxe and Cocoon by Sealy Chill have incorporated cooling technology within their design that makes these the ideal choice for couples who sleep hot at night.

The GhostBed is 13” tall over seven layers and packed with cooling foam technology. The bed starts off with the proprietary Ghost Ice Cover which is cool-to-the-touch and super plush, there’s then 0.5” of cooling fibers and a 1” layer of gel memory foam.

Underneath that is another layer of Ghost Ice material which absorbs excess body heat. This is followed by a 2” layer of Gel Memory Foam and a 2” layer of Ghost Bounce foam, before a final 7.5” of high-density base foam that keeps all the layers in place and offers unrivaled support.

The Cocoon by Sealy has a more simple design, it’s 10” tall over four layers. The first layer is a cooling-to-the-touch cover made from a Phase Change Material which absorbs and dissipates heat for instant cooling.

Followed by a layer of Perfect Fit memory foam that also promotes airflow ensuring the heat doesn’t get trapped between the layers. Next is a Responsive comfort layer which reduces motion transfer and finally a 6” high-density foam layer for additional support.

GhostBed Luxe vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress: Comfort & Support

  • Both mattresses are ideal for side sleepers
  • The GhostBed Luxe is medium-plush with a 6 out of 10 firmness rating
  • The Cocoon by Sealy Chill is a medium-firm with 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness rating

The GhostBed Luxe and the Cocoon by Sealy Chill may have similar ratings on the firmness scale but they both have a very different feel. The GhostBed Luxe has been designed to feel luxurious and soft when you lay on it whilst the Cocoon by Sealy has a more medium-firm feel.

During our GhostBed Luxe mattress review, our tester found this mattress  to be incredibly soft, rating it as more of a 5 rather than a 6 out of 10, however despite the softness it was still supportive. This mattress is ideal for side sleepers who want to experience that memory foam hug or cloud-like experience.

The quilted cover also does a good job of alleviating pressure points and the high-density foam works to keep the spine in perfect alignment. Back sleepers may find that it doesn’t offer the right amount of support in the lumbar region and stomach sleepers will likely sink too far into the mattress causing hip pain and throwing the spine out of alignment.

The Cocoon by Sealy has a medium-firm feel and we thought the 6.5 out of 10 rating was accurate. Whilst there is a slight memory foam hug with this bed you won’t get that sink-in softness, and may find it a little firmer than most all-foam mattresses.

During our Cocoon by Sealy Chill mattress review our tester found that the pressure relief was outstanding with the foam layers gently contouring the body. Just like the GhostBed the Cocoon by Sealy mattress is ideal for side and combination sleepers. Lightweight back sleepers will find it offers enough lumbar support but heavy and stomach sleepers will find too much sinkage.

Both beds do a great job of absorbing motion which makes them ideal for couples, especially restless sleepers or those with differing schedules. The GhostBed Luxe performed slightly better than the Cocoon by Sealy in our tests, especially given that it’s a softer, plusher feel.

Again both beds do really well when it comes to edge support, so if you like to use the entire surface of the bed whilst you sleep or you sit on the edge to get ready in the mornings both will feel secure.

GhostBed Luxe vs Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress: Temperature Control

  • Both mattresses are dedicated cooling mattresses
  • The GhostBed uses a Ghost Ice cover which has an instant cool-to-the-touch feel
  • The Cocoon by Sealy Chill has a cooling cover with Phase Change Materials

Both of these mattresses rank highly on our best cooling mattress guide with the GhostBed Luxe taking the best luxury spot and the Cocoon by Sealy Chill taking the title of best budget. Despite them being all-foam they both use cooling technology to keep hot sleepers cool, this is especially important if you’re sharing a bed as that double heat can lead to countless nights of disturbed sleep.

The GhostBed Luxe uses cooling tech within a couple of its layers. This starts with the cooling cover which uses the proprietary Ghost Ice fabric within its quilted cover. This provides an instant cool-to-the-touch sleep surface that also uses thermo-sensititivity technology designed to pull excess heat away from the body. There is also a layer of natural fiber which wicks away excess moisture and a layer that encourages airflow so that heat doesn’t get trapped within the foam.

The Cocoon by Sealy also has a cooling cover that features Phase Change Materials, a technology developed by NASA that is highly effective at keeping temperatures neutral. The layer of Perfect Fit memory foam also works to promote additional airflow.

The GhostBed definitely has more cooling tech incorporated into it than the Cocoon By Sealy mattress, and it scored 5/5 for temperature regulation in our review, with the Cocoon by Sealy coming just beneath it at 4.5/5.
