Google Photos is making sharing and catching up easier with the new Updates tab. Currently rolling out for Android users, this feature replaces the old Sharing tab, bringing all your shared content and conversations into one easy-to-access place. Here’s how the new Updates tab can help if you’re tired of hunting through different parts of the app to find who shared what.
Updates – A New Way to Keep Up with Your Photos
You can access the Updates page from the bell icon located between the Plus button and your profile avatar at the top.
Here, you’ll find a snapshot of all recent activities, including:
- Notifications when someone shares new photos with you.
- Alerts for comments or new photos added to a shared album.
- Updates on new conversation messages.
- Activity from partner sharing.
- Notifications when you are running low on storage.
All updates are laid out chronologically by time, making it easy to see recent activity, whether it’s from today, yesterday, or even last month.
Google has also replaced the Sharing tab, which previously housed shortcuts to shared albums, Memories, and Conversations. Now, all those conversations and memories are tucked away in an overflow menu within the Updates tab. It’s a bit less prominent but considering that most people probably use other messaging apps for their conversations, it makes sense to de-prioritize these features.
Rolling Out Gradually
Google is rolling out the Updates tab feature gradually and it should be available to everyone over the next few weeks. Currently, it’s only available for Android users while iOS users will have to wait a bit more. This update is part of Google’s broader redesign of the Photos app, which began in August when the Library tab was replaced with Collections. The goal is to make sharing and catching up easier by gathering all important updates in one place for quick access.
