EXCLUSIVE PICTURES: Grantchester's Will Davenport actor Tom Brittney has admitted it was 'the hardest decision of his life' to quit the ITV show after six years
Tom Brittney got emotional when he filmed his final scenes for Grantchester.
The actor decided to quit his role as vicar Will Davenport after six years. As you can see from these behind-the-scenes snaps, it was tough for him to say goodbye to co-star Robson Green, who plays Geordie Keating.
The Will star said: “It was one of the hardest decisions of my life. We could not stop crying.”
Robson added: “There was no acting required when that day came to say goodbye to Tom, I remember we hadn't even started the scene and we were in bits!"
Tom joined the show in series four, taking over from James Norton who played vicar Sidney Chambers. The actor also turned his hand to directing during the seventh series, which aired in 2022.
The 34-year-old announced in 2023 that the ninth series would be his final. He will be replaced by actor Rishi Nair, who is playing vicar Alphy Kotteram.
The show is far from over, though, as a tenth series was confirmed last June. While only getting around half of the viewers it did in its first run, last year's eighth series had an average of 3.15million tuning in.
The series is based on a collection of short stories by James Runcie, called The Grantchester Mysteries. Set in the 1950s, it follows a vicar who turns his hand to solving mysteries alongside Detective Inspector Geordie Keating.
The show also included EastEnders legend Kacey Ainsworth as Catherine Keating, Robson Green's on-screen wife.
See Tom's exit tonight (January 15) at 9pm on ITV1.
