Guilherme "Bomba" Vasconcelos, a former MMA fighter known for competing in the UFC and Bellator, tragically passed away in October at the age of 38.
According to TMZ Sports, his death has been ruled a suicide. Vasconcelos, who also gained media attention for his brief relationship with pop star Demi Lovato in 2017, was found at his Illinois home on October 15.
Authorities were called to the residence around 9 a.m. after a woman discovered Vasconcelos in the garage. Security footage from the night before reportedly showed events leading up to his death just before midnight, though his body was not found until the next morning.
Investigation reveals no drugs or suicide note
During their investigation, police found anabolic steroids at the scene but did not locate a suicide note or any other substances.
A toxicology report later confirmed that the only substance in his system at the time of his death was caffeine.
Vasconcelos, a six-foot, 170-pound fighter from Brazil, built a professional MMA record of 10-6 before retiring in 2021. Just before his passing, he had mentioned that he would be unable to compete in an upcoming jiu-jitsu tournament.
It's unclear whether this setback set the Brazilian on a road to suicide, but it certainly could have sparked an episode of depression.
What can be understood from his toxicology report is that if Vasconcelos was indeed suffering from a metal health issue, it hadn't been previously addressed by a medical professional.
There was no sign of any medicinal substance in his body, which there would have been if he had been prescribed medicines such as 'Zoloft' or 'Sertraline'.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the MMA community, with fans and fellow fighters mourning the loss of an athlete who left his mark both inside and outside the cage.
