However, some artists have declined the opportunity to perform.
- Taylor Swift has reportedly declined the opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show multiple times, most recently citing her focus on re-recording her old albums and her busy touring schedule as reasons for turning down the offer
- Jay-Z turned down the opportunity to headline the 2020 edition after the NFL allegedly informed him that they wanted control over who he could bring out for the performance.
- Pink and Cardi B also rejected the NFL's offer to perform in 2019 for similar reasons.
- Adele stated in 2016 that she would not perform at the Super Bowl because "that show is not about music."
- Outkast declined the opportunity to perform at the 2004 Super Bowl because Andre 3000 "didn't want to cut the songs" for time purposes.
