Halsey stirred up conversation this weekend with her homage to late R&B star Aaliyah‘s 2001 self-titled album, recreating the cover dressed as the “Rock The Boat” singer.
The album cover was the 13th for the singer, who is counting down to the release of her own latest work, The Great Impersonator.
“Day 13 of counting down to #TheGreatImpersonator, October 25th,” she captioned the snap. “THE GREAT IMPERSONATOR #13: queen baby girl Aaliyah TRACK 17: Letter to God (1998). Fun fact: I layered this song with vocals from my son when he was a baby, inspired by ‘Are You That Somebody.’”
While a select few seemed to take issue with the homage, an overwhelming majority of fans loved the homage and praised Halsey for the executing the late singer’s look.
“I WAS NOT EXPECTING AALIYAH YOU ATE THIS,” tweeted one fan, with another adding, “That’s such a beautiful tribute! Layering your son’s vocals adds a personal touch that makes the song even more special. Aaliyah’s influence shines through, and I can’t wait to hear how it all comes together.”
“This is so beautiful I’m honestly tearing up. I’ve been a huge Aaliyah fan and to me, she is the most beautiful woman who’s ever lived. I cannot wait for TGI and to hear this song,” another supporter added.
There were also those who disapproved, with one X/Twitter user calling the move “high-key disrespectful.” Many pointed out, however, that the “Lucky” singer didn’t use Blackface and is, in fact, biracial herself for those uncomfortable with the idea of a white woman impersonating a Black woman.
“Her ethnicity doesn’t matter! She’s paying homage to our Baby Girl.. You can’t gate keep inspiration and influence. Love it!,” wrote R&B crooner Tank within TSR’s comment section, with another follower adding, “Whether she was half black or not she did THAT!”
Halsey’s The Great Impersonator is set for release Oct 25.
