Fresh off having plenty to reveal at New York Comic Con, Hasbro has unveiled its new wave of Marvel Legends action figures, including a trio that ties into the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
First among the toys is Red Hulk, a character ostensibly modeled after Harrison Ford as the new “Thunderbolt” Ross (RIP William Hurt) post-Hulkfication, but instead just looks like a repainted Mark Ruffalo with some additional stubbly chest hair added on.
Next up is Sam Wilson’s Captain America, a fine likeness of actor Anthony Mackie sporting a cool new helmet and foldable wings, allowing you to pose him in a cocoon-like defensive position, as seen below.
Still, the star of the hour (and the real news here) is the release of the all-new, all-different Falcon, Joaquin Torres—a character played Top Gun: Maverick‘s Danny Ramirez, who takes up the mantle in light of Wilson’s promotion to Captain America.
Providing our best look at the character’s costume yet, we can see he looks a hell of a lot like the MCU’s Vulture, doesn’t he? Utilizing the same green/brown color scheme as Micheal Keaton’s portrayal of Adrian Toomes in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Falcon II’s flight suit is far more streamlined than the Vulture’s DIY ensemble, fully befitting a superhero funded by the U.S. government. Torres’ Falcon additionally sports a beaked helmet, much like the heroes of the 1970s anime Gatchaman, or Winslow Leach following his disfiguring accident in The Phantom of the Paradise.
If you recall the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, in which the U.S. Air Force lieutenant turned flying sidekick was previously introduced, Torres spent a lot of time fixing Redwing, Sam Wilson’s reconnaissance drone, so it stands to reason he should inherit the robotic little buddy as an accessory, himself.
Unlike his comic book counterpart, however, this version of Torres is no longer a result of genetic experimentation by the nefarious Dr. Karl Malus (who was the villain of the second season of Netflix’s Jessica Jones, if you recall!), and much like his predecessor, possesses a pair of artificial wings instead of organically grown ones. However, he’s still very green, befitting his look in the comics, begging the question: what’s up with Marvel and green avian men? And when will we finally be blessed with a live-action Sauron?
So, what do you think of Marvel’s new Captain America: Brave New World figures? Do you see a single trace of Harrison Ford in Red Hulk, or did Hasbro truly cheap out on a new sculpt? Let’s discuss in the comments…
