The heartwarming moment a cat tried to build a new friendship has been caught on camera as ginger cat Libby tentatively approached black Labrador Arlo.
In the video, the small cat curiously edged toward the new canine friend, who was relaxing on the couch, gently patting him with her paw and sniffing.
Alongside the video, shared by pet owner Lily Drake from England, the text overlay said: "POV: You got a Labrador and your youngest cat is desperate to become besties with him."
Drake shared the heartwarming moment on her TikTok page, hoping it would bring some joy to others.
"I was inspired to share this moment as my pets bring me so much joy, and I wanted to share that with the world. My cat took a while to warm up to Arlo, but she was soon very keen and interested in becoming besties and playing with him," Drake told Newsweek.
Despite the well-known saying "fighting like cats and dogs," many pets defy the stereotype by forming strong bonds regardless of species.
While cats and dogs may have instinctual tendencies that could lead to conflict, properly socialized, there are no reasons they can't live in harmony.
"Their relationship is still in the works, but they do enjoy zooming around the garden together and playing," she said. "I was overwhelmed by the response, both from TikTok and Instagram, but I'm so glad it reached so many and spread lots of smiles."
The video struck a chord with animal lovers on TikTok, who shared their reactions in the comments.
"My lab wants to play with our cats all the time, but he's too boisterous, and they run from him," said Mags.
Viewers like Linda and Lizzie couldn't get enough of the heartfelt moment between Libby and Arlo. "Those gentle taps on the dog's ear," said Linda. Lizzie said that the video was "the loveliest thing ever."
"Aww," wrote commenter MoniMocks. "I hope this is furever and ever besties."
"Oh how that warmed my heart. Thank you for posting this," wrote jacks2023.
Viewer Brian said that the relationship between the pair was a great lesson for many: "That's wonderful. A lot of humans can learn a lot about tenderness and love to another."
