The answer has apparently been hiding in plain sight all along with many of us storing the condiment wrong.

It’s a debate that’s divided households for years - does tomato ketchup belong in the fridge or the cupboard?
Now, Heinz has finally settled the matter, and it turns out many of us have been getting it wrong.
After polling more than 2,500 Brits on social media, the condiment giant found the nation was almost split down the middle.
But to put the debate to rest, Heinz confirmed that ketchup should, in fact, be kept in the fridge.
Olivia Lennon, a Heinz representative, told the Daily Mail: “There was only ever one correct answer, and we're happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup lovers that our ketchup has to be in the fridge.

"Although we're aware many Heinz Tomato Ketchup fans have been storing their ketchup in the cupboard, we do recommend refrigeration after opening.
"This is the best way to maintain the delicious tangy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love."
The answer has been hiding in plain sight all along. If you flip your Heinz ketchup bottle, you’ll spot a small note that reads: "For Best Results, Refrigerate After Opening."
Despite being sold on supermarket shelves, which might suggest otherwise, the ketchup’s natural acidity makes it shelf-stable until opened.
Once the seal is broken and it’s exposed to air, refrigeration helps preserve its colour, flavour, and freshness.

Leaving ketchup out after opening doesn’t mean it will spoil overnight, but it can affect its quality over time.
Signs that your ketchup has gone bad include a sour smell, discolouration, or mould. If you notice any of these, it’s best to throw it out to avoid an upset stomach.
So, why do restaurants leave ketchup sitting out on tables? The answer is simple - high turnover.
In busy eateries, ketchup bottles are often used up quickly, sometimes within a day, reducing the risk of spoilage.
