The star has been steadily working as an actor since he was a teenager. Ben got his big break in 1995 on the Disney Channel series Flash Forward, starring in 26 episodes through 1997. After that, the Boston, Massachusetts, native made the jump to film, landing a role in director Barry Levinson‘s 1999 dramedy Liberty Heights.
Critics took notice, as Todd McCarthy in Variety praised Ben’s breakout performance. “It was just, my God, these people are filthy and covered in blood and this is a real story and we’re surrounded by navy seals who are helping guide us, but they’ve got sparkling American f–king teeth and that felt somehow apprehensible. My instinct was just to grab some dirt and put it in my mouth,” Ben told The Guardian in 2022.
When he was cast as a Holocaust survivor in Barry Levinson’s 2021 film The Survivor, Ben visited the former concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
“I needed to put my hands on the rails and listen. It sounded like the birds have still not returned. You see those piles of baby shoes, you see the piles of people’s belongings: their toothbrushes become these objects that defy thought,” he explained to the outlet.
