Jim Carrey has shared why a famed film actor "hated" him during their time together on set for Batman Forever.
At 62, the Hollywood legend, known for hit films as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the Sonic the Hedgehog series, made waves with his portrayal of The Riddler in the 1995 superhero flick.
But it wasn’t just Carrey’s performance that became iconic; it was also the apparent disdain his co-star harboured for him. Opening up on the Norm Macdonald podcast about the behind-the-scenes drama, Carrey recounted his efforts to unravel why his work had so irked the fellow actor, resulting in an unwelcome discovery.
Detailing an encounter with Tommy Lee Jones, Carrey revealed: "He couldn't sanction my buffoonery. That's when we did Batman Forever together."
In another snippet from after filming wrapped up, Carrey reflected on how he planned to channel any tension with Jones into his acting. He said: "When I heard that I was going to be acting with Tommy Lee I, of course, thought this is gonna be wild. Like, if he's a pain in the butt, I'll use it and if he's, you know, a happy guy, I'll have a good time."
The saga reached a head when Carrey bumped into Jones at a restaurant post-filming commencement, where it became starkly evident that the movie legend was not a fan of Carrey’s comical style.
Jim Carrey recounted a memorable encounter with Tommy Lee Jones at a restaurant. He said: "The maître d' said 'I hear you're working with Tommy Lee Jones, he's over in the corner having dinner.' And I went over and I said 'Hey Tommy, how are you doing? ' and the blood just drained from his face. It was before the biggest scene we have together in the movie."
The actor, known for his roles in The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, claimed that Jones began to shake as he stood up to greet him, uttering: "I hate you."
Carrey humorously suggested that Jones must have been in the middle of a "been in mid-kill me fantasy" fantasy when he approached the table, an action he later admitted was a "big mistake".
He asked Jones: "Gee, man, what's the problem? And he said, 'I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'" Fans found Carrey's recollection hilarious, with one user commenting: "And yet Tommy Lee Jones spent most of that film essentially trying to one up Carrey in the buffoonery department."
Another added: "I cannot sanction your buffoonery' is the most Tommy Lee Jones thing he could've said."
