How Emma Crouch’s Firing Can Turn Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Around

15 hours ago 2

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 is currently sailing around Spain. The drama has been present, but things have felt off all season. Even with three returning faces in this series, something feels missing, within this Below Deck spinoff. But when Emma Crouch, a deckie working underneath Gary King, got fired, I found myself sitting back up, thinking that this cast change-up might help save this series.

Emma wanted to excel, but her drive and quick adaptation skills were lacking. Her resume, however, is solid. Maybe, in time, we will see Emma setting her sights on a return to the Below Deck family.

Speaking of returns, Season 5 brought us back Gary, Captain Glenn Shephard, and Daisy Kelliher. Yet, BDSY is still slowly descending into the murky depths of the Mariana Trenches.

Whether or not you agree with Emma’s firing, her early exit might finally help turn this ship-based series around. And I will explain why now.

BDSY Season 5 is sinking, so something had to give

During Season 4, the trifecta known as Daisy, Gary, and Colin MacRae toppled over. A love triangle that also involved an unwillingness to let former flirtations cease scenario was happening onboard, leaving zero winners in its wake.

Oh. And then Gary was borderline canceled by the network. Due to this, Gary has been (somewhat) edited out of Season 5. Yes, he is still present, but his scenes are fewer than the norm, aiding in an off feeling that this season is carrying.

Since taping for Season 5 started up a handful of days after the Season 4 reunion, the tensions amongst this trio remained high. Things were so bad that Colin dipped out, leaving Gary and Daisy (and the Captain) as the only returning crew members for Season 5. Couple this with a lesser-seen Gary, and you will get what we have now: a weird charter season.

The scenes of Daisy comforting Gary sans Emma’s departure were good. These moments reminded us of how familiar this series once was. However, it’s not the same, as Gary’s problematic past feels as if it is lurking over every scene. With his future in further seasons still unknown, it’s getting harder to connect with this friendship, as, we might never see Gary again.

A new deckhand also just arrived. With this cast addition, room changes are transpiring. Perhaps Daisy and Gary can now work through their issues as they settle into their new roles as roomies. Or not.

Either way, one swapped-out yachtie will hopefully give BDSY Season 5 a much-needed boost.

When Emma Crouch got fired, her early exit created a desperately needed storyline for BDSY Season 5

Emma is her own worst enemy. She wanted to perform well, but anxiety was getting in her way. Also, Gary failed to see a lack of urgency in Emma. Meanwhile, Emma complained about never receiving feedback from Gary until it was too late, as the bulk of his words of wisdom arrived on the same episode as her eventual firing.

It’s been a frustrating, annoying mess. Yet, Emma’s firing was one for the books. At first, she behaved as anyone might, crying while embarrassed for her deckhand failings on national television. I could never.

Neither could Emma. She bolted out of the primary cabin, where her firing meeting with Gary and Captain Glenn was underway. But she left on a kind note, explaining that she needed space to help her process this information.

Once she was composed, Emma returned to the Captain with her brave face on, letting him debrief her on why it was her time to exit stage left. Then, Emma made her rounds, saying goodbye to those who brought her joy this season on BDSY.

And yes. Emma left Gary high and dry, sans any parting words of pissed-off(ness). I loved all of it. Emma showed a rawness that resonated with many, and then she displayed growth and grace, only to depart from BDSY Season 5 with a touch of shade tossed at her former, messy boss.

Finally, we saw a complex, multilayered storyline. So thank you, Emma, as your firing began turning this series around well before you even stepped off the Parsifal III.

Thankfully, Emma and Gary are now in a great place.

Chase Lemacks is the new Emma Crouch, and he has past dramas with Gary King that might be entertaining to watch on BDSY Season 5

When one porthole closes, another opens.

As life has it, Chase Lemacks just came on board to take over Emma’s position. This deckhand appeared in BDSY Season 4, where he quickly butt heads with Gary. Chase liked to start his sentences with an explanation, noting that Gary’s methods did not match his prior Bosun’s. His energy ticked Gary off, as this was his boat now, buddy boy, so Chase needed to either get with the program or jump ship.

In addition, Chase’s sense of humor failed to land with some of his costars in Season 4. However, Chase did not lean into a villainous role. Instead, he took ownership of his misspoken jabs. He then worked on bettering himself, but sadly, his efforts never landed him his preferred boatmance partner, Mads Herrera.

Gary got the girl instead. But in a fun twist, Mads was just as non-committal as Gary. So Gary’s catch was quickly self-released, as Mads was only in his bunk for a good time, not a committed time.

Overall, Chase and Gary excelled at stoking each other’s immaturity levels. Therefore, now that Chase has boarded the Parsifal III, it’s safe to say that the waters in Spain will shift, but how they will shift remains to be seen.

Either way, sometimes, life has to remove a person to reveal a problem. So, as sad (for some) as it was to watch Emma go, I have faith that her exit will help to jump-start more engaging storylines on BDSY Season 5.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo.
