Howden’s capital markets and insurance-linked securities (ILS) specialist unit, Howden Capital Markets & Advisory (HCMA), has announced that Philipp Kusche, who serves as the firm’s Global Head of ILS & Capital Solutions, will take on an expanded role as Chairman of HCMA, Europe, with Mitchell Rosenberg becoming Co-Head of Global ILS.

HCMA also recently hired Paul Poschmann from Gallagher Re as Vice President, as the firm continues to expand its presence across Europe.

As Chairman of HCMA, Europe, Kusche will provide further support and both global and local expertise within the broader HCMA team, including its UK-based team.

In his new role, he will remain based in New York.

It’s important to note, that Europe is a strategic priority for both reinsurance broker Howden Re and its capital markets unit HCMA, with ILS being a critical component of driving success and growth throughout the region.

Howden Capital Markets & Advisory has also been building share in the catastrophe bond issuance banking and broking space, with currently almost $5.5 billion of the outstanding cat bond market having been worked on by the firm, Artemis’ leaderboard shows.

A renowned veteran across the ILS sector, Kusche spent over 13 years at reinsurance giant Swiss Re, before he joined HCMA in 2016.

He joined the reinsurer in late 2002, taking on the role of Property Underwriter, where he was based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Then in 2006, he headed the company’s ILS and Origination team, where he gained valuable expertise across the ILS market. He would serve in this role until April 2016, before he joined HCMA.

Meanwhile, Rosenberg brings over a decade of industry expertise towards his new role.

He has been with HCMA since 2022, where he has served as a Managing Director.

Before that, he spent just under five years at Aon Securities, the capital markets and investment banking arm of the insurance and reinsurance broker, where he served in a number of different leadership roles, including stints as Vice President, Director, and Managing Director.

Rosenberg also previously worked at Swiss Re too. He joined the reinsurer in 2012 as an Associate, before later going on to become Assistant Vice President. Throughout his time at the firm, he was based in New York, and Zurich, Switzerland.

Jarad Madea, CEO of Howden Capital Markets & Advisory, commented: “Congratulations to Philipp on this expanded role, which will see him bring more support to our European clients while continuing his Global ILS focus. I would also like to congratulate Mitchell on his appointment as we continue enhancing our ILS franchise. With expanding our ILS leadership team, we are well-positioned to support our clients and investors globally.”

Philipp Kusche, addressed his new role: “With ILS increasingly important to client discussions, I look forward to supporting our global efforts and our growing activities in Europe. I’m also pleased to announce Mitchell’s promotion in our growing ILS platform, which will allow us to further grow and serve our clients globally.”

Mitchell Rosenberg, added: “The ILS market continues to present significant opportunities for (re)insurers, MGAs, and investors. I am honored and excited to work alongside Philipp, a well-recognized industry leader, and our outstanding global team as we deliver industry-leading capabilities, value, and insights to clients across all areas of the ILS market, including catastrophe bonds, sidecars, and broader fundraising initiatives.”

Philipp Kusche will be speaking at our upcoming ILS NYC 2025 conference. Register to attend here.
