'I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy': Jack Vidgen's powerful and vulnerable message amid addiction battle

Australian singer Jack Vidgen has shared a powerful and vulnerable update amid his battle with addiction.

Vidgen, who found fame on Australia's Got Talent in 2011, posted a candid message to his thousands of followers over the weekend, revealing he had sought support in a rehabilitation facility.

"As I write this I'm so terrified of judgement," Vidgen, 27, began the social media statement alongside a photo of himself from his hospital bed.

"I'm terrified of what people will think, what they'll say or whisper to each other if I pass them by on the street," he admitted.

"I've been so scared, for years, of this thing that lives inside me, which is my addiction."

Addressing his thousands of followers, the singer said he had made the decision to let everyone "in a bit and let you know, I'm not OK".

"For years I've heard the saying 'It's OK not to be OK' and never really known what the f--- that means. I feel like I'm somewhat understanding it now," he shared.

Vidgen revealed he voluntarily checked himself in to get help.

"I've been in a five week long relapse where I haven't been able to come up for air. My addiction has been the biggest struggle of my life and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy."

The singer admitted he couldn't pinpoint what had triggered his recent relapse after nearly reaching four months of sobriety.

"I think it was just a snowball effect," he said, sharing he had lost his close friend and uncle recently as well as experienced "a whole bunch of other stresses".

Vidgen reflected: "I just don't think I reached out for support as much as I needed to. Or even realised that I needed the support that I needed."

He admitted he had held off speaking out over potential career fallout, but was now putting his mental health first. The singer signed off by thanking those closest to him and the medical staff.

The post was flooded with messages of support, including from radio star Jackie 'O' Henderson, who recently revealed her own private addiction battle.

"Addiction is so powerful but nothing to be ashamed of," she wrote.

In a follow-up post to his Instagram story, Vidgen got teary as he shared he was "overwhelmed" with the love and compassion he had been shown since his post.

Vidgen said over the past few years he had felt sharing his private addiction struggle was "part of [his] purpose".

"I feel like this could be the start of something i'm actually meant to do in this lifetime."
