Leave it to Jon Stewart to take politicians to task for their hypocrisy.

It's no secret Los Angeles is facing unprecedented devastation as wildfires continue to affect the communities of the Palisades, Altadena, and their surrounding areas.

On top of the hellish landscape bookending the northern parts of LA County, conservative critics are now using the moment for political talking points, including targeting California's leadership, Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass, for mismanagement of the disaster.

On Monday's episode of The Daily Show, Jon spoke about the politicization of the wildfire disaster. He called out Republicans for suggesting Democrats agree to policy changes before wildfire aid is approved.

Let's chat about all things Politics

"The problem now is Republicans appear to want to attach their 'I told you so's as a condition of funding California's disaster relief," Jon said.

"What the fuck is wrong with you? Really, senator from Alabama — the state near the bottom in math, reading, and test scores — next time you get hit by a hurricane, why don't we have a little parent-teacher conference to say that if you got your scores up, you would get the money? Or actually, let's not do it, because you'll get the money anyway — because we're not psychos. That is psychotic."

"I can do The Daily Show thing. I can run down all the congresspeople and senators on the right calling for conditions on disaster aid that absolutely had the opposite view when it was their state on the line," Jon added before pivoting his joke.

"I'm not even going do it because red states are always the tragic victims of circumstance outside of their control, and Democrats always vote for their aid. Whereas blue state disasters are a function of their flawed morality and policy. And if we help blue state survivors, what message will that send?"

"I don't know what kind of a system you can develop that completely mitigates the risk of fire, plus drought conditions, plus 60- to 80-mile-per-hour winds, plus delicious wood," Jon continued. "These people don't actually care. They're not actually trying to find a solution. They're just trying to work their pet issues into this tragic situation."

But Jon was fair in criticism of all political parties involved. In response to LA Mayor Karen Bass's apparent flub during a press conference, Jon said, "I'm not saying she's Churchill," referring to U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who led Britain to victory during World War II.

While politicians and conservative critics like Marjorie Taylor Green, Alex Jones, and Elon Musk are peddling conspiracy theories about the reason behind the severity of the fires and are using buzzwords like "woke" and "DEI" as proponents of blame, many firefighters and first responders are doing real work of putting out the fires without any political ultimatums.
