Is Skeleton Crew‘s First Big Twist Hiding in Plain Sight?

The new Star Wars show, Skeleton Crew, is here and the first scene of the first episode immediately hits you with a question. A question that, 15 seconds into it, basically every one of us answered. But, since it’s not explicitly stated yet, we’re here to inform you that yes. Yes, you were right. That’s exactly who you thought it was.

The first episode of Skeleton Crew begins with a group of pirates hijacking a ship hoping to find loads of credits. When they don’t, the crew mutinies against their captain, Silvo–who, throughout the whole scene, is wearing what looks like a sinister blend of the Leia Boushh helmet from Return of the Jedi, a praetorian guard, and a pirate’s tricorne. Because of the helmet, technically, we aren’t supposed to know who Silvo is yet. But then you give it a second. The voice is oddly familiar. We’ve seen that swagger before. Then, when the episode ends, the answer is right there on screen for you to see, listed in the credits. It is, indeed, Jude Law’s character Jod Na Nawood.

Law’s name is the first name in the cast credits for the show despite the fact his face never appears in the episode. That’s your first clue. And yes, while some shows credit their biggest stars—like Law on Skeleton Crew—even if they don’t appear in an episode, that’s not the case here. It’s Law behind the mask. A fact that’s bolstered when he appears as a prisoner at the end of the second episode. The brig is exactly where the pirates would’ve taken their disgraced captain, isn’t it?

Plus, Law already told us that ‘Jod’ isn’t the only name his character has gone by. “One of Jod’s other names is actually taken from a really old early Star Wars comic book,” the actor recently teased to io9 at a press junket for Skeleton Crew. “I won’t tell you which one! But yeah, it’s a reference to a character in a very early comic.” Silvo doesn’t ring any bells from Star Wars history, so what could a third identity this mystery man has had even be?

So there you have it. You thought it was Jude Law in the opening of the show and it was. So, what does that mean for what we’ve seen so far? How did Jod Na Nawood rise to become a pirate captain? Why does he go by Silvo? Which is his real name? Where does his Force ability come from? Was he, at some point, a Jedi as Wim suggests? Those are questions that haven’t been answered yet, but surely will soon. For now, though, you can give a big fat “I told you so” to anyone who didn’t believe you when you called it.
