'It comes in waves': Keith Urban opens up about grief after death of wife Nicole Kidman's mum

Keith Urban has opened up about the death of his mother-in-law Janelle Ann Kidman.

On September 7, it was announced his wife Nicole Kidman's mother had died aged 84.

Now, weeks later, Urban has spoken out about their grief and appreciation for the public support during an appearance on USA TODAY.

After performing on the show, host Hoda Kotb asked how the couple were after losing their family member.

"I know you were supposed to be on our plaza awhile ago and then you had an unfortunate death, Nicole's mum passed away," Kotb said, per People.

She then asked: "We just want to send our condolences and also, how is she and how are you guys doing?"

"Thank you very much and thanks for having us back. We really appreciate that," Urban replied.

"It's up and down; it comes in waves. But the outpouring's been amazing. So thank you everyone for that. We really appreciate it."

The news of Janelle's death came shortly after Kidman arrived in Italy for the Venice International Film Festival, where she was receiving an award for Babygirl.

Nicole and Keith share idyllic photo for wedding anniversary

The actress left Venice and later returned home to Australia.

A letter written by Kidman was read on stage at the film festival as her award was accepted on her behalf by director Halina Reijn.

Kidman said she was "in shock" at her mother's passing, admitting "my heart is broken".

The actress later shared her appreciation for the public support in a joint Instagram post with her sister Antonia Kidman.

"Every message we have received from those who loved and admired our Mother has meant more to us than we will ever be able to express," they wrote.

"Thank you from our whole family for respecting our privacy as we take care of each other."

Earlier this week, Kidman made a surprise appearance on stage with husband Urban at the Concert for Carolina show.

Urban was performing at the Hurricane Helene relief concert on what happened to be his birthday.

Kidman joined her husband on stage to wish him a happy birthday in front of the crowd.
