Coronation Street viewers are often left stunned by the real-life age difference between Helen Worth and Sue Nicholls, who portray the mother-daughter duo Gail and Audrey.
This Christmas, the pair will be central to the ITV soap's storyline. Despite Audrey's reluctance to see her go, she'll have to bid farewell to Gail as she gets ready to embark on a new chapter with her latest lover, Jesse Chadwick, if plans don't hit a snag.
As Gail anticipates her dream Christmas Day, viewers are left wondering whether the feuding Platt family will let Gail and Jesse have their idyllic winter wedding, or if family feud will ruin Gail's hopes of departing for France with her sixth husband.
The decision for Gail to exit Weatherfield follows veteran actress Helen Worth's choice to retire from her iconic role after an impressive half-century, reports the Manchester Evening News.
In explaining her departure, Helen stated: "This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world."
She continued, "I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding."
Helen also expressed gratitude for her experience, adding: "I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet."

On the show, their characters portray an almost 20-year age difference, with Audrey being depicted at 84 and Gail at 66. The subject resurfaced with the announcement that Claire Sweeney would be joining the soap as Cassie Plummer, Tyrone Dobbs' birth mother.
Someone wrote on Twitter: "People commenting on the 11-year age gap between her and Tyrone probably haven't realised Sue Nicholls and Helen Worth Audrey and Gail are only seven years different in age in real life!"
