Vera's Brenda Blethyn, the acclaimed actress behind DCI Stanhope in the beloved ITV's hit crime drama, appeared in the final ever episode on the show which aired on January 2 after an impressive 14 years on air.
Ahead of the grand finale, the BAFTA-winning star opened up about a "medical emergency" she experienced on set years ago when a makeup artist spotted signs of Bell's Palsy, a condition that causes sudden facial muscle weakness or paralysis, Bristol Live reports.
The incident was revealed during a media event in London, where Brenda and Vera author Ann Cleeves were in attendance. Recounting the scare, Brenda shared: "I was dealt with immediately by a doctor and taken to hospital. We found out it was caused by an ear infection."
Reflecting on her departure from the show, Brenda expressed: "It was a lovely summer back in 2023. And I came to realise I hadn't had a summer with my husband for 14 years. Naturally I missed my family."
She continued: "And my dog Jack, although he was with me in the North East, but I didn't see him much because I was working all day. I love my Vera family but I love my other family too."
Brenda also mentioned how she had considered retirement before taking on Vera in 2010, concluding: "And when you consider I was already thinking about packing work in when I was offered the job back in 2010, 14 series of working on Vera is pretty good going."
