The beloved ITV series Vera has concluded with a poignant twist, as Brenda Blethyn's final scenes were broadcast.

Last year, Brenda announced her departure from the role, leading to the conclusion of the detective drama after fourteen years on our screens.

The final season was comprised of just two episodes, culminating in this climactic instalment, 'The Dark Wives. '

Flashbacks during the episode allowed viewers a glimpse into Vera's troubled childhood with her alcoholic father Hector, following her mother's death, which saw Vera assume a caregiver role from a young age, the Mirror reports.

The final 2 episodes of Vera will air this January

Meanwhile, in her professional capacity, Vera tackled a challenging case where the body of a promising student was discovered at the base of a local landmark known as The Dark Wives. The victim had endured an assault and been left a considerable distance from home; Vera endeavoured to unravel the mystery behind the circumstances.

In her concluding moments on screen, Vera heroically prevented the murder of a young girl named Chloe, confessing that she saw reflections of her own past in the youngster. Offering heartfelt advice, she told Chloe: "Life's just one scary decision after another," before suggesting the team go for drinks to celebrate their success.

Opting out of the celebration, Vera instead chose solitude and reflection, stepping outside the pub to admire the scenery. There, she shared her contemplations with her colleague: "You know what, this case has really made me think, and I did see a lot of myself in young Chloe, it made me think of a lot of things, like how good my team is. It brought back vivid memories of my dad, you helped me scatter Hector's ashes, don't think I ever said thank you."

Vera star Brenda Blethyn has opened up about her emotional departure from the beloved ITV series, revealing she chose to step aside to let others shine.

Amid speculation of her character's fate, Brenda shared insights into her last day on set: "It was very appropriate that the last day of filming was scheduled to take place in the police incident room where so much of the drama has happened. I think our producer Will Nicholson contrived that. You could hear a pin drop when we were filming. Then when I heard, 'That's a wrap.' I was emotional.

There was one more outing for the team

"As, indeed, Vera would have been. There were a lot of people behind the cameras and at the end I thanked everybody. I said, 'We're all as important as one another.' I might be the one playing the title character but it's only an ingredient in a great big pot.

"And all of the ingredients are necessary. Everyone contributes to it. And it's the sum of all of those parts that made Vera a success. And Vera will, of course continue to crack crime in Ann Cleeves' books - and there will be 56 episodes available to watch on TV repeats."

She also touched on the storyline involving Vera's career progression, with a touch of humour about her interactions with co-star Shobna Gulati: "The new Chief Superintendent is rather severe on camera. But Shobna and I couldn't stop giggling. In between takes we were laughing our heads off. At the start of the first film Chief Supt Khalon offers Vera a promotion. It's about time! "
