The Jacksonville Jaguars are currently 2-7 on the season and are now faced with a reality where quarterback Trevor Lawrence could be out for an extended period. The team signed C.J. Beathard from the Miami Dolphins practice squad, and now there's big reasoning as to why that move was made.
More news: Jaguars Sign Former Dolphins Quarterback Amid Trevor Lawrence Injury Concern
Lawrence admitted to being "banged up" after the Jaguars loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, it appears that Lawrence is far more hurt than initially expected.
According to a report from Ian Rapoport, Lawrence is already "unlikely" to play on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Even worse is that the team is weighing options regarding his injury, and Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson was noncommittal about Lawrence's status.
An additional rumor from Jay Gruden indicated that Lawrence might need surgery to repair the shoulder injury that he is currently dealing with. Though Raoport indicated that no surgery has been scheduled, that is an option right now.
Lawrence could be dealing with an issue that will sideline him for the rest of the season, and perhaps longer.
The Jaguars being 2-7 means that the team is unlikely to rally to make the postseason. While that is not a guarantee, it will be hard for Jacksonville to stay competitive and relevant in a stacked AFC.
Losing Lawrence for the rest of the season or multiple weeks will also stifle the Jaguars' chances of a playoff berth. Granted, they do have Mac Jones as a viable backup, but will he be enough to get the job done?
Lawrence suffering any major injury is also very concerning considering the Jaguars doubled down on their young franchise quarterback, by awarding him a five-year, $275 million deal. At the time of the extension, he was tied as the highest-paid quarterback in the league with Cincinnati Bengal's Joe Burrow.
The good news is that Lawrence is still young and the shoulder injury that he suffered might not be significant enough to keep him out long-term. However, this is just speculation, as no details have been released regarding the severity of the injury.
Still, losing Lawrence for the rest of 2024 will be detrimental to the hopes the Jaguars had to rebound their season in any fashion. Though Pederson did not reveal any details, the general sense of the injury feels like the signal caller is likely to miss more than the four weeks if he were placed on IR.
