EXCLUSIVE: James Corden credits the roaring success of his show Gavin & Stacey to how the story portrays relatable love between normal people, similar to millions of people up and down the country
James Corden thinks there aren’t enough love stories about normal folk on TV.
The star is proud that his show Gavin & Stacey centred around a romance between Smithy and Nessa because they look like millions of Brits who aren’t super slim.
He said: “Gavin & Stacey is what you would call a traditional love story and that’s the story that is almost always told. And then there’s these other two who have equally fallen in love, it’s just taken them a very long time to figure it out.
“You don’t see people that look like us on TV very often. You don’t. These stories never get told.
It’s like these people, their love isn’t real, it doesn’t have the depth, they’re not great in bed and they don’t have amazing sex and all those things. But these two characters do.”
James is convinced that Gavin & Stacey is a smash hit because it’s about relatable characters. He added: “I think it just holds up a mirror to what lots of people feel all the time.”
Millions of viewers cheered when Smithy and Nessa finally got hitched in the final episode on Christmas Day. James and co-writer Ruth Jones have been planning that ending for more than a decade.
He said: “Probably from the first Christmas special, when Dave Coaches proposes and Smithy says, ‘Don’t marry him’… from that point Smithy and Nessa had to get together.”
