Janey Godley's funeral is underway in Glasgow.
The much-loved comedian died earlier this month in a hospice aged 63. Janey, best known for her Nicola Sturgeon parodies, announced the heartbreaking news of her ovarian cancer in November 2021.
She was given the all-clear in 2022, before later announcing that another scan had shown signs of the disease in her abdomen. She then cancelled her forthcoming tour this autumn due to her stage four ovarian cancer. Soon after, she announced she would be getting palliative care and going into a hospice.
On Saturday at 10am, Janey's funeral commented at St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow. Among the mourners was former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon. The comedian created voiceover parodies of Ms Sturgeon’s coronavirus news briefings during the pandemic, and the pair became friends.
Conditions are dry but overcast for the funeral, which will be livestreamed on YouTube.
Janey's beloved daughter Ashley confirmed earlier in the week that fans would have the chance to pay their last respects to her mum. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, she shared details about her mum's funeral procession, which took place on Friday, and Saturday's funeral.
Tweeting from her late mum's account, she shared: "Hello friends. For the past few years of ma's life, it was important to her that she shared her journey with everyone, to offer support for others on the same path and to highlight the symptoms of ovarian cancer - all of course in her very singular Janey style, with laughter and candour.
"So many of you who have travelled with us on this journey wish to bid her a final farewell, so here's the details of my mum's final tour, the two cities she loved with all her heart."
Ashley went on: "Friday 29th of November: Janey will have one last visit to Edinburgh, her beloved festival home. At 2.30pm, her hearse will travel from Lawnmarket, heading down the Royal Mile towards St Giles Cathedral, where we will pause for reflection. Then carry on to Cockburn street, Market Street and home to Glasgow."
Ashley then wrote: "Saturday 30th of November: Janey's funeral service is at 10am at St Mary's Cathedral, Great Western Road, Glasgow. Hearse and coaches will leave the cathedral at 11.30am and proceed along Great Western Road towards the crematorium. The service at the crematorium will be private."
It was Janey's heartbroken daughter who announced her mum's death at the beginning of November, writing on X: "Earlier this morning, Janey passed away in her sleep. Her family were with her. The love and support from all her friends and fans during this cancer journey brought her enormous joy. It has also been a huge comfort to us, her family and close friends, thank you."
Ashley had been her mum's voice in the weeks and months before her death, regularly posting to social media and sharing her brave mum's journey.
Shortly before she died, Janey was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow as she shared a pic of her receiving a certificate from her bed.
The post read: “Thank you @UofGlasgow for bestowing upon my mum the honorary degree of doctor of the University of Glasgow. This has brought her so much joy in the final beats of her life. Janey is so honoured and I am so immensely proud of her. I am always proud of her. Thank you for all your kindness and support to our family in this very difficult time."
The University of Glasgow replied: "It is an honour to bestow an honorary doctorate on the incredible Dr Godley. We send all our love and support to Janey and her family."
