Jay Baruchel and Jonah Hill genuinely dislike each other and weren't making it up in This Is The End

This is The End is a bit of a weird comedy film but animosity between two actors leads to comedic gold, and it seems the reason it works was staring us in the face the whole time.

Jonah Hill and Jay Baruchel have been a whole host of projects together over the last 10 years but the actors actually haven’t always seen eye to eye.

In fact, according to Baruchel, the pair have never really addressed their animosity towards each other.

But funnily enough, the tension between the two actors translated well to the screen and made for one of the oddest things in the film with an apocalypse, cannibals and a giant d*** swinging demon.

In a resurfaced 2023 interview on the Daily Beasts podcast, Baruchel explained that his character’s onscreen dislike for Hill was rooted in reality.

He said: “Jonah and I don’t get along super well, or at least didn’t back then.”

The host then said their hatred comes through well on screen to which Baruchel replied ‘yeah no f****** s***, it does.'

The two actors played exaggerated versions of themselves in the flick, it likely makes the performance easier when you simply don’t like the guy opposite you.

Explaining the odd situation, Baruchel said: “It was this weird thing of mining personal s**t. But not for catharsis… mining it just for comedy.

“So mining it in the most monetized, capitalist way of, ‘we’re going to dig up real personal s–t,’ but nobody’s going to go home feeling better about it. We’re just going to turn it into a f*****g product.”

While the pair aren’t the only actors who had to work together despite not being fond of one another, Baruchel admitted the pair didn’t resolve their differences behind the scenes either.

He continued: “We never talked about any of the real s**t. Like, it never came up for real. Because we’re both 1982 kids which means we were raised in a great misogynistic tradition of not talking about s**t.'

“Especially two boys … we'll air grievances. When we’re mad at each other and say that, but it’s very rare to be vulnerable.”
