Vice President JD Vance had his wife and children with him as he was sworn in as the 50th Vice President of the United States. Three-year-old Mirabel Vance adorably stole the show, sucking her thumb as her father took the oath of office on Monday, Jan. 20, inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.
Viewers reacted to Mirabel's moment on social media with one writing on X, "I think the whole country can come together and agree that JD Vance’s daughter sucking her thumb with those kid bandages on her other fingers is totally adorable." Another wrote, "JD Vance’s daughter covering herself with bandaids just ahead of an important event is an iconic toddler move."
Usha, who proudly stood next to her husband, carried their little girl, while also holding the Bible that JD used during the swearing-in ceremony. The couple's sons Ewan and Vivek, who were dressed in matching blue suits and ties, were also present for their dad's big moment.
Usha looked pretty in pink for the inauguration ceremony wearing a custom Oscar de la Renta cashmere coat with scarf wrap and tea-length dress. Two days earlier, the mom of three stunned in a strapless velvet gown by the same designer at the Vice President's Dinner held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Usha made history on Monday becoming the first Indian American second lady. She and the vice president, who met in law school, have been married since 2014. Speaking about her husband at the 2024 Republican National Convention, Usha said, "The most determined person I knew with one overriding ambition, to become a husband and a father and to build the kind of tight-knit family that he had longed for as a child. My background is very different from JD's. I grew up in San Diego in a middle-class community with two loving parents, both immigrants from India and a wonderful sister. That JD and I could meet at all, let alone fall in love and marry, is a testament to this great country. It is also a testament to JD. And it tells you something about who he is."
"When JD met me, he approached our differences with curiosity and enthusiasm. He wanted to know everything about me. Where I came from, what my life had been like. Although he's a meat and potatoes kind of guy, he adapted to my vegetarian diet and learned to cook food for my mother, Indian food. Before I knew it, he had become an integral part of my family, a person I could not imagine living without," she continued. "The JD I knew then, is the same JD you see today, except for that beard. And his goals in this new role are the same that he has pursued for our family. To keep people safe, to create opportunities, to build a better life and to solve problems with an open mind. It's safe to say that neither JD nor I expected to find ourselves in this position. But it's hard to imagine a more powerful example of the American dream."
