John Legend sang one of his classics to a group of incarcerated firefighters who have been combating the Los Angeles wildfires.
On Sunday, the 12-time Grammy winner posted an Instagram reel showing him meeting with the CDCR Fire (Camp) Program crew after a 24-hour shift. Those eligible in the program generally have a minimum-custody status, meaning eight years or fewer on their sentences, and earn up to $10.24 per day.
While spending time with the group, who were battling the Eaton Fire, Legend broke out into his 2004 breakthrough hit "Ordinary People." Facial expressions among the incarcerated firefighters were varied, with some appearing glad to hear the soul musician sing, while others looked visibly tired after a full day of work.
"Yesterday, I spent time with some of the nearly 1,000 incarcerated firefighters who have been battling LA’s wildfires," Legend wrote in the caption of his post below. "After a 24-hour shift, they described their intense work on the line. They are often the first to arrive and the last to leave and perform the toughest and riskiest tasks to protect our communities."
He continued, "Something that stuck with me from this group was that no matter where we come from, we all have the capacity to serve, protect, and rebuild—not just for ourselves but for our community."
Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen were forced to evacuate their home amid the wildfires earlier this month. As of Jan. 13, they had returned.
