The younger son of Beatles legend John Lennon has hit back at social media users after his comments about Elon Musk sparked insults.
Sean Ono Lennon, son of the late musician and his wife Yoko Ono, recently took to X, formerly Twitter, to defend X owner Musk from criticisms about his level of power and influence.
Musk, the world's wealthiest man and one of the most prominent allies of President-elect Donald Trump, drew substantial attention from the political world last week, as well as significant backlash from Democrats, as he played a major role in tanking a bipartisan spending agreement.
While a new deal was reached on December 20 and passed through Congress, many warned a government shutdown was possible when the initial agreement fell through.
Although many leading Republicans have touted South African-born Musk as a positive influence on U.S. politics, Democrats have slammed the billionaire and suggested he is calling the shots instead of Trump. Some began referring to him as "President Musk" and to Trump as the "vice president" as the spending bill debacle ensued.
Amid the discourse, musician Lennon, 49, took to X to push back at the criticism directed at Musk, as he compared the business owner to a number of other billionaire entrepreneurs with influential power.
"People complaining about @elonmusk's influence never complained about [Bill] Gates or Google or [George] Soros or [Jeff] Bezos or [Mark Zuckerberg]...the list goes on," he wrote.
"Maybe because you're full of s***?" an X user responded, prompting Lennon to take aim at his detractor's expressed vegetarianism by writing: "Soy."
Another X user chimed in by commenting that Lennon's late father is "rolling in his grave."
"Your mom is rolling in my bed," Lennon hit back, to which the X user replied that he was a "50 year old man."
"And your mom still coming back for more," Lennon wrote back in the exchange.
Newsweek has contacted a representative of Lennon via email for comment.
Lennon is no stranger to sharing his opinions online, In the lead-up to the presidential election, he discussed Trump writing "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!" on Truth Social after the singer endorsed his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
"I can't think of a single song so I don't really know if I like it or not," Lennon said on social media of Swift's music. "But I know she is a uniquely successful American. A young woman who has done things in a way that no one has done before her."
Lennon continued later in the post: "A more 'presidential' or gracious criticism might have been something like 'She is a brilliant young woman. I have a lot of respect for what she has accomplished. I don't believe she knows the reality of the party she is endorsing. I hope her fans are able to make up their own minds and understand the big difference between a talent in music and an understanding of politics or economics.'"
He also wrote it was a "not a good look" for "some old grumpy dude to get angry at her," referring to Trump's post about Swift.
